A hydrosol, also known as a hydrolat or plant water, is an aromatic, water-based product produced by distilling fresh plants, flowers, bark, or roots. These floral waters contain water-soluble plant components and trace amounts of essential oil, offering a gentle, versatile, and, often, more affordable alternative to essential oils for skin care, aromatherapy, and therapeutic uses.
 
Key Characteristics and Uses:
Production: Created through steam or water distillation, where steam passes through plant material, carrying beneficial compounds, which then condense into a liquid.
Composition: Primarily water-based, making them gentle enough to apply directly to the skin without dilution.
Uses: Widely used as skin toners, facial mists, body sprays, therapeutic compresses, and for creating natural perfumes or skincare formulations.
Benefits: Known for being hydrating, calming, and skin-balancing due to a natural pH of 5–5.5.
Storage: They are perishable; they should be stored in cool, dark places and often require refrigeration to extend their shelf life, which is generally 1–2 years.
Unlike essential oils, which are fat-soluble and highly concentrated, hydrosols provide the therapeutic benefits of a plant in a milder, water-soluble form.
